The first stirrings of the rich history of rum rippled on the verdant sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean at the very start of the 17th century. At first called rumbullion (a word that was later also used to describe ‘a riotous good time’ or ‘great tumult’), it was finally shortened to rum, and became a firm favorite around the world.
